Auricular therapy also known as auriculotherapy, ear acupressure or auriculo-acupressure. This therapy comes under alternative medicine. Auricular therapy uses the concept that our ear is a microsystem that corresponds and reflects our entire body. The auricle is the outer portion of the ear hence the name auricular therapy. Stimulating certain points on the surface of the ear allows the patient to relax and treats the physical, mental and emotional health. It is not just the ear that can be used for the application of treatment; there are other areas on your body which upon stimulation also promote relaxation and relief. It is majorly used to relieve stress, depression and anxiety. It helps the patient to be calm and relaxed. It is a non-invasive method of treatment.

Let Us Look at Some History

Auricular therapy originates from China. It is an ancient healing therapy that uses acupressure points on the body to treat various conditions. The same is applied to the ear. The traditional Chinese method of treatment was thoroughly study by Dr. Paul Nogier. Dr. Paul Nogier is acknowledged as the father of auricular therapy. In 1950’s Dr. Paul Nogier (France) stumbled upon his patients who has a scar on their ears. Turned out his patients were treated for the sciatica pain. Sciatica pain is basically pain radiating along the sciatic nerve that run along both your legs from the lower back. He discovered that a woman had cauterized certain portion of the ear to treat the sciatica pain. Paul Nogier decided to test this and he started stimulating the sciatica point using other means like needles or seeds or simply applying pressure in that area. He was also able to treat the sciatica pain by stimulating these areas. He observed that the ear looks a lot like an upside -down fetus where if you examine carefully you can see the earlobe represents the fetus’ head and the legs will be the upper part of the ear and the middle part will represent rest of the body. The science of auricular therapy has been extensively researched, documented and publish however most doctors are not aware of it.

Let Us Take a Look at Its Uses

This age-old Chinese medicine has been used for thousands of years for treating problems related to digestion and insomnia. The idea is to stimulate these points on the ear to normalize the function or various systems in our body. Acupressure is therapeutic because it leads to the systemic release of endorphins. Endorphins are the feel-good hormones they relax and put in a calm state. Auricular therapy is used to treat problems like:

  • Sleep issues

  • Addiction

  • Helps with smoking cessation

  • Digestion problems

  • Inflammation

  • Circulatory problems

  • Pain in parts of the body

  • Stress

  • Mental disorders

  • Allergy

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Constipation

  • Headaches

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Migraines

  • Lower back aches

  • Enhances metabolism

  • Supports weight loss

  • Post-surgery pain

How Does This Work?

According to Chinese medicine we have vital energy called ‘Qi’ that flows in our body along with the blood vessels. Auricular improves the flow of this vital energy and restores the balance of Yin and Yang within the internal systems. Blockage of energy causes a lot of problems, it disrupts the flow of energy which leads to health problems. These blockages can be removed using auricular therapy. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the vital life energy ‘Qi’ allows us to heal naturally; it basically enhances our body’s ability to heal on its own. According to the traditional Chinese medicine if the body and mind are in sync with each other we can heal illnesses on our own. Every structure of the human body can be mapped to our ear, that why it makes it so much easier to treat ailments by stimulating acupressure points on the ear. Auricular therapy can be done using needles, seeds, tiny magnets or by stimulating the points on the ear by applying tiny electrical impulses. The method of how to apply pressure depends on the auricular therapist. But this form of therapy is a more holistic approach to treat chronic problems and this method of treatment is non-invasive and has no side effects on the body. All it does is to improve the immune system functions and the functions of rest of the organs promoting an overall good health.
